Cornelius, Oregon

Located in Washington County, between Hillsboro and Forest Grove, the town of Free Orchards was renamed Cornelius in 1871. Cornelius was named for Colonel Thomas R. Cornelius, an 1845 pioneer

Cornelius is located about 25 miles west of downtown Portland. Home of the annual "Blueberry Festival" and nicknamed "Oregon's Family Town", is in the heart of the Tualatin Valley and Washington County.

The town site of 107 acres was originally called Free Orchards due to the large number of fruit trees on the land. Close at hand, there are six city parks from which to choose. There is also great fishing, sailing, water-skiing and picnicking at nearby Hagg Lake.

Vineyards and tasting rooms of the Oregon wine country start just outside town, along with six golf courses. Pumpkin Ridge golf course has been ranked as one of the top 5 courses by "Golf Magazine".

Agriculture is a primary industry in this town, but it is quickly becoming a community for Portland-area business and commuter living. Cornelius has affordable housing and a country feel.

Pumking Ridge
Forest Grove, Oregon

Forest Grove is a city located in Washington County 25 miles west of Portland, Oregon and only 45 miles from the Oregon Coast at Tillamook.

Pacific University is at the heart of Forest Grove. The university was founded in 1849, making it one of the oldest educational institutions in the western United States.

The Oregon Department of Forestry has verified that Forest Grove contains the largest giant sequoia in Oregon. Located at the corner of Pacific Avenue and B Street, this tree is 32 feet in circumference, 152 feet high and has a crown averaging 70 feet in diameter. The trees in Forest Grove add to its charm. It has been a designated "Tree City" since 1990.

Forest Grove has its own school district, and many parks and recreational facilities including the very popular Hagg Lake Park and the Forest Grove Aquatics Center. For fun, take in dinner and a movie at the Forest Grove Grand Lodge, followed by frisbee-golf on the Grand Lodge lawn!

Forest Grove was home to the Tualatin tribe and settled by pioneers in 1840.  The City of Forest Grove was incorporated in 1872.

The City was named for a large grove of Oregon white oak situated on a knoll rising over the Tualatin Plains.  The nearby Coast Range separates Forest Grove from the coastal city of  Tillamook and its beaches, which are approximately one hour away. The vast Tillamook State Forest is less than a half-hour's drive west of town.

Mount Hood (11,237 feet), 65 miles east of Forest Grove, is visible from many parts of town on clear days. Other volcanic peaks in the Cascades, including Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Adams and Mt. Jefferson, can also be seen.

A large wildlife refuge attracts thousands of migratory birds to Forest Grove and provides habitat for many species of mammals and other birds, including bald eagles. Gales Creek enters the Tualatin Valley at Forest Grove from its source in the Coast Range.

I really like "GroveNet" - a free online newsletter serving Western Washington County. Check it out for more Forest Grove information

Hagg Lake Wetland
Pacific University has been the most distinctive aspect of the town throughout its history. Originally a small farm town, it is now primarily a bedroom suburb of Portland.

As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 17,708. It is now considered the 26th largest city in Oregon and grew 30% between 1990 and the latest census of 2000
