Parks and Golf

Portland's vast number of parks contribute to it's beauty and outdoor recreational options. Portland claims fame to the largest natural forest reserve within a city in the U.S., the smallest park in the World, and the only city park with an extinct volcanic cinder cone. The crater is located in the northwest part of the park. Half of the cone has been cut away (now housing a tennis court and outdoor theatre) and the cinders were used to pave the nearby parking lot. Mt. Tabor now contains a permanent exhibit of the volcanic cone. Search for all Portland Parks and recreation here!

Two Notable Parks Among Many

Forest Park west of downtown Portland, Oregon is the largest natural forest reserve within a city in the U.S., with over 5000 acres (20 km²) of old growth forest, threaded by miles of recreational trails. Forest Park stretches for over eight miles (13 km), overlooking the Willamette River. Forest Park is the third largest urban park in the United States.

Washington Park is one of Portland's best loved and most used park. Along it's trails, it features the Japanese Gardens, Hoyt Arboretum, World Forestry Center, Children's Museum, Oregon Zoo, Rose Garden, Children's Park and Vietnam War Memorial. Recreational opportunities include an archery range, picnic facilities, a soccer field, tennis courts and miles of hiking trails.

Portland is for the Dogs!

The Portland area is home to many wonderful off-leash areas for you and your dog to enjoy. Many of these parks are full-time, year-round off-leash areas, while others are part of traditional city parks, with a designated area for off-leash activity. For this reason, dog parks are classified into two groups -- dedicated parks and shared parks. Click here for a full list of all Portland area dig parks and their comparisons.
